Studio Ghibli, a Tokyo-based animation film studio, has produced several anime films that have earned international acclaim. In fact, six of the studio’s films are among the top 10 highest-grossing anime films of all time. The list includes Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, Ponyo, Princess Mononoke, The Secret World of Arrietty, and The Wind Rises. And what else do these Ghibli films have in common? All these blockbuster animated films are produced by one brilliant man – Toshio Suzuki. To celebrate the greatness of Toshio Suzuki, the Studio Ghibli Exhibit in Tokyo opened its door for the public.
The Studio Ghibli Exhibit took place at the Edo Culture Complex on the grounds of Kanda Myojin. It serves as a tribute to the works of Toshio Suzuki, one of the studio’s producers and a former president of the famous animation studio. The exhibition is called Toshio Suzuki and Ghibli. It features memorabilia of his famous works such as character figures, posters, and collectible items. In addition to these, the exhibit also includes some of Suzuki’s calligraphies, sketches, and production notes he made. Moreover, you can also find all his inspirations in producing these films which include vintage manga (comics) and magazines.

Fans of the Ghibli films now have the chance to see their favorite anime characters up close. And the most sought-after feature of the exhibition is the fortune-telling by twin sisters Yubaba and Zeniba from Spirited Away. You can find their huge sculptural heads in the Omikuji section of the exhibition.

Despite being identical twins, Yubaba and Zeniba have opposite personalities. Yubaba, who loves wealth over anything else, will tell your fortune about money and success. On the other hand, Zeniba who puts love above anything else will tell your fortune about love and friendship. Regardless of your choice, they can reveal your destiny by pulling out a number hanging inside their mouths.

After picking out your number, find the corresponding number on the nearby dressers. Inside the drawer, you can find a stack of fortunes. Pick up the one on top and read your destiny.
Aside from the fortune-telling heads, the Studio Ghibli Exhibit also features a miniature version of Yubaba’s bathhouse. The exhibition lasted through May 12, 2019. If you missed the event, let us take you back there through these photos.
