When I took dietetics in college, the portion sizes listed for this product were reiterated over and over. These portion sizes are about correct for what we should be consuming at each meal (meat portion equal to a deck of cards, cup of veggies etc.) The USDA outed the Food Pyramid a few years back with something similar to this, called the My plate, in an attempt to get people to grasp the portions that we should be having. I think this would be very useful.

Katie DaCosta im glad to hear the usa has finally dropped the food pyramid, but im still weary of any health or dietary product that is not shown to be based on peer reviewed scientific research. though i appreciate many products such as this are mostly consistent with the general consensus of diatriticans, without proper credentials, it is open to abuse, or mistakes.

Avril Gordon All dietitians are required to go through extensive certification courses to earn their title, take a national exam and go back to school/ get re-certified every 5 years. They're also required to do field work/ attend meetings within those 5 year time spans. The schooling is hard and keeping your credentials is an intense process. You're referring to nutritionists, those individuals do not have these same certifications behind them and are not part of the US dietetics association, where these peer-reviews are conducted and health programs are created. They base their findings on modern science, and as science continues to advance, our knowledge on food is ever-changing. Something you knew about a banana 5 years ago may not apply anymore.. It's these dietitians' jobs to get that information out to people, because it's hard work keeping up with it all. I'd feel completely safe listening to what a dietitian has to say. 🙂

Katie DaCosta i am quite aware of the difference between a 'nutritionist' and a dietitian, and appreciate that dietitians are fully accredited, and their work is scientific.
It is this product which is unaccredited, there is nothing to suggest that this product has been made in consultation with dietitians, or any other accredited medical practitioner, or even any research at all. like I said, it might go with the general consensus, or even follow someones published guidelines, but then again it might not, and as an untrained member of the public I have no way to know. personally i would expect a product that follows either a set of public guidelines, or to be developed with dietitians to be labelled as such, its quite the selling point, indeed i would not buy a dietary product with out it. a simple 'portions as advised by the USA dietetics association' or 'developed with certified dietitians' or 'NHS approved portions' would be quite sufficient, yet it is not there. as is, it could have been made up on the fly for all i know.
Katie DaCosta –
Avril Gordon Yeah, I got that you're concerned about the product's legitimacy. That's why I let you know that the portion sizes on this product are what continues to be recommended by these credited dietitians. The ADA does not take part in labeling products, so it's our job as consumers to know what a proper portion size is. If eyeballing it works well for you, that's great! But some people need the helping hand, this would do the trick.
