It started out as nothing but a joke. However, it has leveled up into a global thing as people started to sign up to a mission. And that mission is to “Storm Area 51.” This situation has overtaken hundreds and thousands, and they’ve been sharing Area 51 memes to pique more of the uninformed’s interest. Now, people are checking out those we would call “alien cheeks.”
The big Facebook event is now welcoming 1.9 million people who have confirmed themselves as “attending” the storming attack. The schedule? This September 20. What’s fascinating is that even the U.S. military has come out, warning against the event.
Laura McAndrews, the Air Force spokeswoman, has given the stern warning through The Washington Post:
“Area 51 is an open training range for the U.S. Air Force, and we would discourage anyone from trying to come into the area where we train American armed forces.”
Doesn’t that sound quite ominous? One poster who later knew about the warning responded reassuringly that the event wasn’t serious. They wrote:
“Hello U.S. government, this is a joke, and I do not actually intend to go ahead with this plan. I just thought it would be funny and get me some thumbsy uppies on the internet.”

So, what really is Area 51? Well, it’s the common name of a USAF (United States Air Force) facility, and this facility is highly classified. The location is within the Nevada Test and Training Range. Its official name is actually “Homey Airport” or “Groom Lake,” which comes from the salt flat beside its airfield.
As you would expect, authorities do not reveal to the public the details of the operations under the facility. But, historically speaking, it’s likely to run the development and testing of aircraft and weaponry they’re still experimenting on. USAF has acquired the area since 1955. Back then, it was primarily to flight test the Lockheed U-2 aircraft.

Because of the high degree of secrecy inside and surrounding Area 51, it has been a favorite object of many conspiracy theories. Among these “theories” is the existence of UFOs or unidentified flying objects.
Nonetheless, Area 51 has not been declared as a secret base. It’s just that the researches and activities that authorities do in this facility are Sensitive Compartmented Information. In other words, it’s top-secret.
It was on June 25, 2013, that the CIA made the public acknowledgment of the base’s existence. The revelation was due to a Freedom of Information Act request, filed in 2005. The CIA then declassified some highly essential documents. These were the ones that talked about the purpose and the history of Area 51.

The exact location of this facility is at the southern portion of Nevada, which is part of the western U.S. It’s 134 km or 83 miles north-northwest of Las Vegas. Surrounding the area is a famous tourist spot. This includes Rachel, Nevada — a small town on the “Extraterrestrial Highway.”
With orange posts marking out the base’s perimeter, and with guards patrolling in camouflage fatigues and white pickup trucks — it’s never easy to just “storm” inside. Interested people would typically call these guards as “camo dudes.” Meanwhile, there are also signages around the perimeter. These warn any trespasser of a deadly force in case of any entry.
Maintaining the border also required massive technology. Surveillance cameras plus motion detectors are ready to sense any suspicious action even from a distance. Authorities have even positioned some of the motion detectors a little farther from the base into the public land. This way, the guards would know of any number of people approaching the territory.
