For the longest time, people have always associated grey hair with old age. However, hair trends evolve and so does the way people perceive hair colors and hairstyles. In fact, over the past few years, we’ve seen how people have ditched their neutral hair colors to go for strikingly bold ones. However, the hype over outrageous hair colors has clearly toned down now. As a result, this gave birth to yet another new hair color trend. Apparently, the grey trend has grown in popularity, especially among women, regardless of age.
So, more women are now choosing to rock their grey shade. Indeed, going to a professional hairstylist is still the best way to give your tresses a metallic makeover. However, there are also lucky ones who are simply born with it. And now, many of them are forgoing their monthly hair dye routine and maintenance. Instead, they’re now choosing to openly embrace their naturally silver locks.

The online community Grombre has significantly helped raise awareness of this movement. Founded by Martha Truslow Smith, Grombre started off as a small Instagram community in 2016. Smith was only 24 back then when she decided to finally “ditch the dye.” So, to help her through her own transition, she created the Instagram page @grombre. Grombre is a play on “grey” and “ombre”—with the latter referring to a trend involving gradual color gradations.

Since then, the community has presented itself as “a radical celebration of the natural phenomenon of grey hair.” Through the years, Grombre has successfully evolved into a positive platform, encouraging women to embrace who they really are. Aside from helping her through her own transition, Smith also revealed her deeper reason behind establishing the community.
“I want to challenge the way we think about what we consider ‘beautiful,’ and why, and propose that we have more important things to spend our precious time, energy and resources on if we find our hearts aren’t aligning with the things we find to be someone else’s biases.”

Although people still have varying opinions about grey tresses, that doesn’t change the fact that it’s simply a natural phenomenon. According to trichologist Madeleine Preston, the onset of white strands is normally noticeable on women in their 30s. She noted that the predisposition to go grey earlier is a result of melanin deficiency which is typically genetic. However, she also clarified that nutritional and hormonal factors, as well as stress, can affect one’s hair color too.
