We all want to have a happy life after retirement. This is true not just for us humans but also for our animal companions as well. In order to save senior dogs, a couple in Clifton Park, New York renovated their home and turned it into a dog sanctuary. As man’s best friends, dogs are undeniably the greatest animal companions we could ever have. Affectionate, loyal, and protective, it’s as if they were created to offer joy and companionship to humans. Indeed, no other pets could provide the same level of love and devotion that a dog could provide. But in reality, do these friendly canines also get the same level of love from their owners?
More often than not, we hear dog owners saying how they love their pets. But as soon as their dogs start to age, they tend to abandon their senior dogs. Apparently, senior dogs are prone to age-related health issues that require intensive medical treatment. While these owners must have loved their dogs when they were young and healthy, financial crisis and lack of commitment must have driven them to give up on their elderly doggos. Sadly, some of these senior dogs were just left abandoned on the streets to die. Other owners even resort to euthanasia to put an end to their sufferings.

Chris and Mariesa Hughes understand the hardships of having to take care of an elderly dog. When their dog Moses succumbed to age and illness, they did everything they could to save him. The couple even sold some of their belongings to cover expensive treatments.
Unfortunately, Moses eventually passed, leaving his owners heartbroken. The death of Moses inspired the couple to organize a non-profit aiming to help senior and disabled dogs in need of care. They started the endeavor by turning their home into a dog sanctuary and spent $55,000 for home renovation. They named the non-profit organization ‘Mr. Mo Project’ as a tribute to their late doggo Moses.
“The Mr. Mo Project saves senior dogs nationwide from living in shelters, or worse, [euthanasia],” they explain. “We believe that senior dogs deserve homes too!”

Chris and Mariesa believe that dogs of all ages, regardless of their health condition, deserve the best for the rest of their lives. And this motivated them to put up a rescue retirement community for senior and disabled dogs. The kind-hearted couple has been taking in several shelter dogs, particularly elderly canines with medical conditions. More than just a comfy home, the dog sanctuary also offers rehabilitation, covers medical costs and vet bills for their canine residents.
Needless to say, the project would need sufficient funds in order to carry out these services. And the couple couldn’t possibly afford the expenses all by themselves.
