The world presents endless opportunities for artists because of the myriad of materials and countless subjects. And Colorado-based artist Remington Robinson embraces this and captures the moment by leaving the four walls of his studio behind and painting en plein air. Inspired by the infinite beauty of the outdoors, he creates miniature oil paintings. And his artistic pieces are something we haven’t seen before.
Most landscape paintings are created on a large-scale in order to put on view even the tiniest detail. Furthermore, a large-scale canvas gives the artist so much space to get things done. But Robinson proves that even small paintings can make a huge impact. Instead of a regular canvas, Robinson captures natural scenery on a small wooden panel Velcroed onto the lid of an empty mint tin.
Artist Creates Miniature Oil Paintings Inside Empty Mint Containers

His Altoids Tin series consists of miniature oil paintings housed inside empty mint containers. He also uses the metal canister as a paint palette where he arranges and mixes his oil paints. In order to accurately render the details, he uses fine-tipped paintbrushes to make his artwork as realistic as possible. Of course, creating small paintings requires practice on how to handle tiny details. His choice of canvas aside, his virtuosity as a painter is also a vital factor in making exceptional artwork.
“I use a new container every time, and when I am finished, the painting stays with the container it was painted in, complete with the palette of paint that was used to create it,” Robinson explains. “It then is basically like a little art artifact.”

After he’s done with the painting, he just leaves the unused paints in the canister and lets them dry. So, the unused paints become a part of the art piece. His Altoids series of miniature oil paintings depict various landscapes including mountains, farms, beaches, forests, flowers and much more. On his Instagram page, you can see photos of his finished creations placed in front of the original location. And it looks as if the metal tin is some kind of a high-definition camera capturing the breathtaking scenery.

Robinson puts his pocket-sized paintings up for sale on his online shop. But they tend to sell out fast. He usually posts his recent creations on Instagram before putting them up for sale online. So, it’s a good idea to follow his Instagram page to get updated with his latest works and head immediately to his online shop to beat the crowd.
