The Volkswagen Beetle is one of the most widely recognized car models of all time. So, it doesn’t actually come as a surprise that it’s a popular choice for repurposing and modification. We’ve seen how aftermarket companies and car enthusiasts have converted it into an RV hybrid and even a couple of motorcycles. This time, designer Danni Koldal has transformed his 1961 VW Beetle Deluxe into a sleek, matte black roadster.

At a glance, Koldal’s ride will easily remind anyone of the cars from the iconic Batman and James Bond movies. For starters, it boasts luxe paintwork in matte black—a stark contrast to the usual Type 1s in pastel hues. But what’s even more striking is the apparent modification and elimination of some of the car’s signature parts.

To give the classic compact car a modern flair, Koldal has removed the roof and trimmed down the windshield. He also replaced the old side mirrors with bullet type ones to give it an edgier look. In addition, he got rid of the original chrome bumpers, as well as the fender-mounted turn signals. On top of that, he went for whitewall wheels that seamlessly complement the silver trims on the door and hood.

As for the interior, he scaled it down to the bare essentials. The dashboard features a speedometer-cum-odometer, as well as a radio and a few vintage indicator lights. In addition, the dashboard, along with the seats, are all clad in black leather to complete the car’s luxe look.

Although people have likened his revamped ride to a Batmobile, Koldal is clearly more of a Superman fan

Other notable features include a Superman logo hood ornament and a cursive “Superman” decal sticker on the back. Koldal’s revamped ride also features lowered suspension for improved aerodynamics and better traction.

Based on Koldal’s Instagram feed, it appears that his car has been featured in numerous automotive trade shows and even garnered awards. And apparently, his 1961 VW Beetle Deluxe has also made a name for itself overseas. In fact, a friend of his has spotted a photo of his car printed on a shirt that’s being sold in a shop in Thailand.
