In late 2013, Noah Bloom found an abandoned baby magpie on the ground in Newport, New South Wales. On taking the bird home, his family decided to raise her and nurse her back to health before releasing her. Little did they know, that she would become a member of the family. Meet Penguin, the magpie who acts more like a dog or cat than a wild bird. The whole family (mom Sam, dad Cameron, and sons Reuben, Noah and Oli) dote on Penguin and she has become a fixture around the house. Although she is now free to fly outside wherever she pleases, and leave entirely if she wants, she never strays too far from the Blooms' home and still comes inside when it's raining or when she just fancies a hug. Talking to ABC Australia, Cameron Bloom said…
"She's here at 3:30pm usually when the kids get home from school. She sings when they come up the driveway. She usually hangs around until night and then I put her in the tree outside somewhere. She's free to fly – she often will just hang out around us in the morning then when the kids go to school she'll do her own thing. I never thought she'd become as much a part of the family as she has. They [the kids] love her like a dog, but better."

It goes to show that birds are just as intelligent, loving, and full of personality as dogs and cats are, if not more so. We should never underestimate any of our fellow creatures on this planet.
