The power to create zippers on any surface and open a portal to another realm is something only fictional anime characters can do. But this British sculptor proves that exceptional talent equates to superpower abilities with his mind-bending art that can be compared to the fictional abilities of Bruno Bucciarati aka Zipper Man. Endowed with skills and talent, Alex Chinneck can unzip a building, making it appear that the façade is partially ripped open by a giant zip.
But unlike many anamorphic illusion murals we’ve seen before, Chinneck’s unzipped buildings present three-dimensional elements featuring an actual peeling surface. Hence, the viewer can entirely see the effect from any angle or direction unlike anamorphic art that requires the viewer to stand from a specific vantage point to see the effect. Chinneck introduced his unique mind-bending art in August 2018 when he unzipped an abandoned office building in Kent, England. It featured the white-colored façade being split into two by a giant zipper in the middle. Amazingly, the peeled layer actually revealed the open upper floor of the building to make it appear more convincing.

The creative sculptor uses a composite of cement and flexible materials to create, not render, the peeling layer. This makes his mind-bending art far from being just an illusion. His second project, however, offers a new aspect that could also give the viewer the illusion that the unzipped area is a portal to another dimension.
In the 9th of April 2019, Chinneck unveiled another art installation exhibiting an unzipped building in Milan’s Tortona district. This time, the giant zip opens at the side to create a peeling layer curled down at the side.

Unlike the first installation, this building in Milan doesn’t reveal an open space within the peeled part. Rather it reveals a plain white wall. But wait until it gets dark and the white wall will give off an ethereal light that optically turns it into a portal. More surprises await you when you step into the building.
You can find other zippers installed inside, one on the floor and one on the wall. Just like the giant zipper on the façade, the smaller zippers inside are also lighted to fill the space with mesmerizing colors.
