Painting emotions – that’s how London-based artist Zulf describes his work. And by creating charcoal drawings of women cast in light against a dark canvas, his pieces encapsulate flair and drama that are so beautiful and mesmerizing to look at. The talented artist plays around with light, shadows, and silhouettes to create minimal yet breathtaking masterpieces that perfectly capture the beauty and finesse of the subjects.
Zulf uses charcoal and pastel and draws dramatic portraits of women on black paper. Women partially hidden in the shadows, the artist prefers to keep an air of mystery around his subjects. The artist revealed that he uses references instead of drawing from life. After finding his perfect reference, he depicts the subject in a different way by inventing a hidden light source to illuminate delicate details. He then creates a dramatic balance of light and dark to accentuate the parts that are exposed to the mysterious light source.
