There’s another way to enjoy fruits that doesn’t involve devouring them down. Fruit carving is a very common technique used by culinary artists to garnish gourmet dishes. By sculpting the fruit into intricate work of art, the technique makes dishes more appealing while allowing people to appreciate the creativity of the artist and the beauty of nature. The traditional craft is believed to have its roots in Thailand and was initially meant for royal banquets and religious offerings. Today, this technique is very popular around the world particularly in Japan and China. And what used to be a royal craft has now become an internet sensation.
Thanks to Japanese artist Tomoko Sato, more and more people are now getting more interested in fruit carving. And you only need to see her stunning creations to know why. Apples, watermelons, avocados, oranges, papayas, and even veggies such as sweet potatoes and turnips – she can transform all these fresh produce into spectacular works of art. She meticulously hand-carves beautiful motifs and symmetrical patterns on the surfaces to create edible art that looks almost too pretty to eat.

Sato discovered her passion for food carving in 2004. She became so interested in the craft that she traveled to Thailand, the home of the craft, to learn it and hone her skills. After studying and practicing the craft for years, she is now eligible to teach the art. She is now offering food sculpting classes in Kyoto where she is currently based and also in Fukui, her hometown. You can keep up with the artist on Instagram and see her other spectacular food and soap sculptures.
