There are 195 countries in the world – each upholds its own culture, language, dialect, religion, and human values. Thus, one country significantly differs from other countries in so many aspects. Chinese cartoonist Siyu Cao attempts to introduce the cultures of China to the world through witty comics. Honestly speaking, many countries hold broadly unfavorable views of China and we saw the anti-China rhetoric spiked during the Covid-19 pandemic. The anti-Chinese sentiment has also led to discrimination and violence toward Asians in many parts of the world.
China, in particular, has gained a negative reputation due to bad impressions including communism, pollution, human rights violation, cultural superiority, and territorial disputes with its neighboring countries. Apparently, China is considered one of the most hated countries in the world because we only see the bad side of it. Siyu Cao, who uses the moniker Tiny Eyes, tries to unveil the multifaceted Chinese cultures that are rarely heard of. The artist creates witty comics to illustrate the cultural differences between China and other Western countries. And to emphasize that accepting these differences can lead to a harmonious relationship.

The talented cartoonist was born in Beijing but she was able to learn the diverse cultures of various countries by traveling, studying, and working abroad. She experienced first-hand how to interact with different races and connect with them despite the cultural differences.
“Many people that I met were curious about China,” she explains. “To me, learning about other cultures has always been a fun experience, and I want to pass this feeling to people who are curious about China.”
