Japanese are the undisputed masters of cute food art and they don’t even need to become chefs or professional culinary artists to master the art. In Japan, it is common for moms to turn ordinary meals into adorable works of art just to entice their kids into eating. While many people in Japan are turning food into kawaii creatures, textile artist Atelier Hatena is crafting woven wool into felted bread creatures. By doing so, this Hiroshima-based artist creates adorable sculptures that look like food and tiny critters combined.
Atelier Hatena knits together surreal yet cute loaves and rolls of bread out of felt fabric. Miniature dinner rolls, white bread loaves, golden baguettes, croissants, and melon pans – these felted bread sculptures take a whimsical twist with the addition of four tiny legs under each little piece. The four-legged yet faceless creatures may look a bit intriguing. But there’s also a fascinating cuteness to them that many Japanese were so smitten with the so-called ‘bread bugs’.

Hatena’s felted bread creatures are so well-loved in Japan that a famous Japanese toy maker produced a capsule toy version of them, in collaboration with the artist. If you’re in Japan, you can easily find these in gashapon (capsule toys) vending machines that are installed nearly over corner of Japan. Even when you’re not in Japan, you can still buy these adorable sculptures via Minne, the biggest online marketplace in Japan. You can also follow the studio on Instagram to see their other felted creations.
