Disney is the gold-standard for animation and we’ve seen how its animation style have changed over time. Apparently, it has faded out from 2D animation to catch up with 3D technology. But despite the shift to a more advanced technology, its character designs remained as they were – with cartoonish proportions. Disney princesses, as we know them, still flaunt those exceptionally large eyes and diminutive figures even after getting the 3D treatment.
California-based digital artist Holly Fae creates a series of digital artwork using Procreate app wherein she reimagines Disney princesses with more realistic facial proportions. She edits the images on her iPad and using an Apple Pencil, she fixes the cartoonish features with lifelike proportions to make the characters look like real humans. The artist starts the makeover by making the eyes smaller and reconstructing the cartoony cute nose. Then she elongates the round, tiny face and finishes up the transformation by retouching the hair.
Digital Artist Transforms Disney Princesses To Make Them Look More Realistic

The now-viral series started when she played around a pic of Elsa (Frozen) on her iPad while she was stuck in bed one day. What would Elsa look like with more realistic proportions? That was the question she asked herself and tried to find out of boredom. After she had completed the transformation, she shared the before-and-after pics on Facebook and the video of her process on TikTok. A few hours later, her posts have gone viral with thousands of people requesting to do the same to their favorite Disney princesses.
And that’s how her series of ‘lifelike transformation’ on iconic Disney princesses kicked off. After doing Elsa, it was Anna who received the digital makeover next. It was then followed by Ariel, Rapunzel, Belle, and many more.
“The initial Elsa video was really on a whim, but since that one, I’ve put a lot of care into each transformation, especially in the case of Moana and Jasmine,” Fae says. “I spent lots of time looking at photos of women of their ethnicities because I wanted to get the features right.”

Of course, the digital artist isn’t done with the project yet as she promised her followers for more of these ‘realistic makeover’, not just on Disney princesses but to Disney male characters as well. In fact, she had just finished giving Flynn Rider (Tangled) some realistic proportions. So, expect to see more Disney characters getting the realism treatment any time soon.
