Artist Pippa Dyrlaga Creates Detailed Animals By Cutting A Single Sheet Of Paper

From the ancient art of origami and papier-mache to contemporary card models and paper sculptures, artists have come up with more creative ways to artistically approach and adapt paper art. Yorkshire-based artist Pippa Dyrlaga brilliantly fuses two different types of papercraft into her unique technique. She is known for her intricately detailed paper cutouts. But unlike the traditional technique of papercutting which uses up to 8 sheets, Dyrlaga hand cuts from a single sheet. Note that using a single sheet of paper is a rule of pure origami. So, she’s basically practicing the craft of papercutting and applying the rule of origami in her creations.

The British artist has been papercutting since 2010 and has developed her own technique in making paper art. Aside from cutting from a single sheet, she also draws out the images by hand on the reverse of the paper before she cuts it using a scalpel. This makes it different from the traditional papercutting technique where the sheets are folded prior to cutting. Her inspiration comes from the natural world. Growing up on a canal boat in Mirfield, she was fascinated by the beautiful British wildlife surrounding their home near the waterways. The pristine beauty of her hometown’s flora and fauna has inspired much of her work which mostly feature animals, plant life, and natural landscapes.
