Accomplished makeup artist Sarah Still takes her artistic talent from the faces of celebrities to the canvas. This Canadian artist is now making a name for herself as a renowned painter with her captivating animal portrait paintings. Although she takes inspiration from the vibrant creatures of wildlife, Still removes any distraction of color to bring out greater emotion from her oil painting masterpieces. With limited grayscale color palette, her series of black-and-white life-sized artworks allow the viewer to focus on other aspects of the subject such as the texture of fur and feathers.
Removing the color naturally shifts the emphasis of an image to other compositional elements. Presenting more contrast than colorful ones, an image in black and white conveys stronger emotion with none of the pre-set emotions that come with colors. If you look at one of Still’s animal portrait paintings, you instantaneously recognize the texture, tone, and the composition that perfectly capture the beauty of each species. Her owl painting, for example, instantly directs your focus on the bird’s enormous glassy eyes while paying close attention to the reflection of the scene in front of it.

Still makes up for the lack of vibrant colors in her animal portrait paintings with mind-blowing details. In some of her pieces though, she adds a delicate pop of color to bring the subject to life such as the wolf with the yellow eyes, the blue-eyed jaguar, and the yellow-beaked owl. Still is dedicated to painting animals although she also had other works depicting people, flowers, and rocks.
“My work may evolve to include other subjects one day, but for now, I’m finding joy in the beauty of wildlife and reminding my audience that our world is shared,” Still says.
