In Japan, there is no such a thing as a boring, plain-looking food. From bread and candies to hot pots and bento boxes, there’s always a touch of kawaii in every dish and snack. Prepare to drool once again over these adorable rice cakes that are as cute as a button. Japanese baker Masaaki Miyake specializes in making nerikiri wagashi, a type of mochi (rice cake) filled with sweetened white bean paste. But his amazing dessert art takes this traditional Japanese confections to a whole new level of cuteness.
His bakery shop, Gogashi Beniya Miyake, is known all over the country for its adorable rice cakes in the form of tiny, chubby animals. Since nerikiri are hand-molded from soft and smooth glutinous rice flour, they can be designed and shaped into almost anything. Miyake transforms each delectable treat into cute animals, beautiful flowers, and seasonal-themed figures that look almost too pretty to eat. In celebration of the Wagashi Day (June 16th), Miyake unveiled its South Pole collection featuring round and cute seals and penguins filled with red bean paste.
