Artist and cancer survivor Emily McDowell knows first hand how people can act strangely when talking to loved ones with serious illnesses. Everyone handles things differently. Some people overcompensate and constantly ask how the patient is feeling whereas others don't know what to say hence they avoid ever saying anything. As McDowell had been through the isolation of being ill, she created a series of empathy cards that people with serious illnesses can identify with. Gone are all the cliches, replaced by witty and truthful words.
McDowell said on her blog,
“It was the loneliness and isolation I felt when many of my close friends and family members disappeared because they didn’t know what to say, or said the absolute wrong thing without realizing it.”
People will be able to purchase these cards in the knowledge they are not making that same mistake.
