Photographer Anand Varma captures the first three weeks of a bee's life in this enthralling 60 second time lapse video, below. Bees are responsible for pollinating a third of the world's food crops, yet our favorite honey-bearing insects are currently being threatened by the Varroa mite, leading scientists to scramble to find a solution, such as breeding a mite-resistant bee. So far, the only mite-resistant bees that they've been able to breed have lacked important characteristics, like the honey bee's natural gentleness, and, importantly, the ability to store honey.
