Temari spheres are traditional Chinese toys, that were introduced into Japan back in the 7th century. Originally, these toys would have all been hand embroidered, often using the thread from old kimonos, and were given to children as a gift from parents or grandparents on New Year's day. However, nowadays, it's somewhat of a lost art and your average Chinese or Japanese person wouldn't know how to make one. One user on 'Flickr', NanaAkau, photographed an enormous collection of temari balls that were all hand-embroidered by her now 94-year-old grandmother. The grandmother started to learn the craft in her 60s and has produced more than 500 spheres since then. Each one is unique and incredibly beautiful. Let's take a look!
