Dogs, as we know, are descendants of wolves. But unlike their friendly descendants, wolves are wild canines and they cannot be domesticated. This means you can’t just go out and get a wolf as a pet. Although wolves cannot be domesticated, they can be tamed to accept the presence of humans in the right circumstances. For instance, a fully grown wolf that has lived in the wild its entire life cannot be tamed and are naturally hostile towards humans. However, a wolf pup that has been raised by humans can be tamed and become attached to humans in a manner reminiscent of dogs.
The latter was the case for Kira, the popular pet wolf from Russia who is currently stealing hearts on the internet. A Russian woman named Alida found the pup in a shelter where she also learned about its heartbreaking story. Kira’s mom was a tamed wolf but was later abandoned by her owners because they realized how difficult it was to tame and maintain a wild pet. The female canine was also pregnant when the shelter took her in and gave birth to a litter of pups under their care. Feeling betrayed and rejected by her humans, the Kira’s mom lost her trust on people and even rejected her own pups.

The staff have to hand-feed the pups because their mom had completely abandoned them. Since the pups cannot be released to the wild, the shelter decided to put them up for adoption. Kira was 28 days old when Alida officially adopted her and took her in. Of course, Alida knew that raising a wild animal wouldn’t be that easy. Besides, wolves are not dogs. But Alida accepted the challenge so she could give the poor pup another chance in life.

To get her accustomed to human companionship, Alida let the young pup mingle with people and other animals. Kira grew up as a friendly pet to her family and is now acting more like a dog than a wolf. She is calm and tolerant to kids and even dogs that try to provoke her. She has never shown aggression towards anyone and would immediately move away when a child appears to be scared of her.

Alida has a 7-year-old son named Bogdan who has been Kira’s best buddy ever since. Perhaps that also explains why she is so calm around kids. Alida documents Kira’s everyday adventures on Instagram where her fans can take a peek of what it’s like to live with a wolf. Although some people are still skeptical about Bogdan’s safety when he’s playing with the canine, Alida assures them by saying Kira has never hurt anyone and she loves Bogdan more than anyone in the world.
