We can gaze and admire famous masterpieces by some of the most influential artists of all time. But what if we can wear these masterpieces too? Brooklyn-based designer Ariel Adkins creates one-of-a-kind wearable works of art inspired by iconic paintings, sculptures, installations, and prominent personalities. Her unique clothing line, Artfully Awear, is a translation of the colors and forms of specific artworks into dresses, capes, and coveralls.
Tapping into the intersection of art and fashion, Adkins recreates visual masterpieces on a wearable canvas. From iconic paintings like Bedroom in Arles (Vincent van Gogh) and Bridge Over a Pond of Waterlilies (Claude Monet) to Piet Mondrian’s abstract compositions and Yayoi Kusama’s polka-dotted Pumpkin sculpture – Adkin’s avant-garde apparel lets you wear these celebrated works of art to take your style to a new level.

Every piece in her collection of wearable works of art is hand-painted with textile pigments and heat set so it can be safely washed. She started Artfully Awear as a way to cope with grief of losing her mother, who was an artist. Adopting art into her interest in fashion, the concept of making wearable works of art embodies the feeling of working alongside her mother.
“When [my mother] passed away shortly after I graduated, I struggled to find my voice as a creative,” Adkins shares. “Around that time, I began exploring using old clothing as a medium, turning garments into works of art to represent the joy that can be created by revisiting things we already own.” As she continued to create clothing, the project evolved into a way of “highlighting other artists or individuals in unique garments that express their inspiration or personal history.”
