Bird lovers have their own different choices when it comes to the most beautiful birds in the world. Some of them would pick adorable species such as blue jays and Bohemian waxwings. And others would prefer more sophisticated species of birds such as flamingos and peacocks. In all honesty, we’ve never met one bird lover who chooses ‘chicken’ as their favorite bird species. Besides, the term ‘chicken-lover’ would denote a person who loves KFC or Chic-fil-A. And we certainly don’t mean it that way. But the fact still remains. As a creature of beauty, chickens don’t really get much love as most gorgeous birds usually get. However, two Italian photographers will try to open our eyes to the beauty of chickens. By capturing over 200 beautiful photos of 100 different types of chickens, they introduced a chicken photobook called Chic!ken.
Matteo Tranchellini and Moreno Monti aimed to showcase the underrated charm of these domesticated fowls. Through this book, they encourage other people to view chickens as alluring creatures and not solely as foods. Tranchellini discovered the attractiveness of chickens while he was searching for a pet Concincina in 2013. A farmer named Giorgio invited him to an aviary exhibition where he found a collection of beautiful chickens on display. There he found Jessicah, a lovely Concincina hen which later became his beloved pet.
After realizing how beautiful chickens are, Tranchellini worked with Monti to capture the loveliness of these avian beauties. The two photographers began attending bird shows in order to take photos of the most beautiful chickens in the world. After taking over 200 stunning photos, the pair decided to compile them into one book. In order to raise funds for the publication, they posted the chicken photobook project on Kickstarter. As expected, the project caught the attention of concerned animal lovers. But the photographers guarantee that none of the models were harmed, forced, or leashed during the photoshoot.
The Chic!ken chicken photobook features multitude diversity of these flightless birds. It includes impressive models such as the grey-feathered fluffy Silkie chicken named Agnes and the copper-feathered Frizzle bantam named Martha. The chicken photobook project gained over 2,000 backers on Kickstarter and it received a total of around $162,000. On July 2018, the chicken photobook was finally published and offered for sale in hardcover format.
