We consider our homes to be a representative of who we are. So many of us take great care in curating the pieces that we add to our personal space. And since the living room is considered to be the face of one’s home as it serves as the epicenter for social gatherings, it’s only natural that we strive to furnish it as nicely and uniquely as possible. Nowadays, there are thousands of furniture design options for us to choose from whenever we feel like upgrading our home. But if you prefer decorating your home with one-of-a-kind, nature-inspired pieces, then this beetle-inspired coffee table is perfect for you!
You may or may not agree, but interior decorators say that placing a coffee table in your living room really makes a difference. A coffee table isn’t just for setting our cups and bowls of snacks on. It also serves a great centerpiece that makes your living room look more put together. And we at Awesome Inventions have featured plenty of brilliantly designed pieces in the past, like the one that featured a half-submerged hippo, or the one that had a built-in fridge. In comparison with these awesome tables, Radhika Dhumal’s beetle-inspired design combines both quirk and functionality so it would make it a great addition to anyone’s home.
Meet Radhika Dhumal, the designer of the Elytra coffee table
This unexpectedly beautiful nature-inspired design is the work of Radhika Dhumal. She’s currently pursuing her Master’s degree in Furniture and Design at the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad, India. Radhika “aspires to innovate and explore design to the fullest to make a positive difference in our surroundings and to promote a better living lifestyle”. She also strongly believes that a space and its elements have a great impact on one’s mental and emotional health. So, Radhika is working towards polishing her ability to help influence people in a positive way through her furniture designs.
Well, she definitely achieved her goal! Because the sight of her beetle-inspired table named Elytra makes us feel light and whimsical. Elytra is the plural form of the noun Elytron, which pertains to the hardened forewing of certain insect orders. The Elytra serves as a protective covering for their delicate flight wings. The beetle’s Elytra will first spread open before it can fly. And this is the characteristic that Radhika borrowed for her award-winning design.
Her coffee table is inspired by the anatomy of the beetle
This beetle-inspired coffee table literally spreads its wings
Radhika’s Elytra coffee table comes with a sturdy wooden frame that’s made to look and move like a real beetle. The extendable wings are tucked into a slightly raised, round platform. This platform remains steady even when you’re adjusting the wings, so your centerpiece is safe! There is ample space on the coffee table even when its wings aren’t opened. But how could you resist not showing off its awesome glass inlayed wings whenever you can? This coffee table is a true work of art worthy of starting a thousand conversations!
When you find yourself needing to some extra space, all you’ve got to do is to open one wing. The other wing will extend simultaneously. Elytra’s wings fully expand to a 90 degree angle, so there’s more room for the things you need to set down on its surface. Its rounded edges, expandable wings and uniquely stanced legs definitely make Radhika’s Elytra table stand out in the furniture design scene.

She won an award for her beetle-inspired coffee table design
The Elytra’s soft, graceful curves and quirky design were so awe-inspiring that it didn’t just earn her praise on the campus. Radhika’s name became known to everyone in the furniture design industry thanks to her curious coffee table concept. Elle Deco International Design Awards presented Radhika with the Student of the Year award in 2019. The award is definitely well deserved, wouldn’t you agree?
At the moment, the Elytra coffee table remains exclusive to Radhika. It is not yet up for sale. However, that’s not going to stop us from adding it to our long, long furniture wish list for our future home. We can totally imagine setting down a teacup on this beetle-inspired coffee table in a sunroom while reading a book! You can view her entire portfolio on her website and on Behance.
