Iowa-based metalworker Drew Evans is breathing new life into scrap bike chains and sprockets by transforming them into stunning works of art. He creates bike chain sculptures mostly inspired by nature, animals, and humans. We’ve heard about artists who are creating beautiful sculptures that are entirely made of discarded scrap metals before. There’s metal sculptor Brian Mock and artist Matt Wilson to name a few. While these metal sculptors feature their own unique styles through their artworks, Evans combines his passion for cycling and art in his creations.
Evans has been in the welding field since 2008. He later utilized his skill in various welding processes by constructing bike chain sculptures in the form of trees and symmetrical shapes. With skilled hands and creative mind, Evans salvages disused bike chains and sprockets and creates sculptures out of these scrap metals. More than just an incredible metal art, Evans also promotes upcycling reusable junks as a way to save the environment.

Like many metal sculptors, Evans also has his own choice of specific material to use. And since he has been working in the bicycle mechanic service, Evans found his ideal material in old bicycle chains and sprockets. So, instead of throwing them away, he gives these unwanted junks new life by welding and turning them into wonderful sculptures.
“I love working with scrap bicycle chains and sprockets in particular for a plethora of reasons, including the fact that they are highly conducive to geometric designs, and they come in a variety of metallic finishes that often take on colorful patinas when heated.” Evans said. “I like to think of all of the thousands of miles they have carried riders on their journeys and the stories they may tell if they could talk.”
