It’s every teenager’s dream to attend the prom night wearing the most elegant gown of all. But what if you can’t afford to buy the prom dress of your dreams? Take a hint from Maverick Francisco Oyao, a Filipino college student from Zamboanga City. Maverick has a younger sister, Lu Asey, who is currently attending high school. Like most high schoolers, Lu Asey is also looking forward to the prom night in February. But there’s just one problem – her parents can’t afford to buy, or even rent, a gown for her.
So, Maverick came up with a brilliant idea to make his sister’s dream come true. He decided to make a dress especially for his sister instead. First, he made a sketch of the gown which features butterfly sleeves and a pleated balloon skirt. Having no background knowledge in fashion design, Maverick took some inspiration from Michael Cinco’s spring gown collection. Michael Cinco is a famous Filipino fashion designer who have created couture gowns for celebrities including Beyonce, JLo, Rihanna, Mariah Carey, Lady Gaga and more.

In order to make his design come to life, Maverick needed to buy some of the materials himself. Fortunately for him, he was able to get some help from his generous friends in providing the necessary materials. After acquiring all the materials, Maverick began making the dress with his bare hands. From cutting and sewing to embellishing and hand-painting, Maverick has to do all the elbow grease to give his sister a Cinderella-like night she would never forget.
When Maverick completed the dress, he decided to post the ‘fruit of his hard work’ on his Facebook page. As expected, the blue fairy-tale-like gown immediately caught the eyes of many internet people. And they were even more surprised when they learned that Maverick wasn’t actually a designer by trade. In fact, he is currently taking up culture and arts education at a university which isn’t related to fashion design in any way. Furthermore, the novice designer also revealed that that it only took him 12 days to finish the elaborate dress.
Despite the flamboyant design, Lu Asey didn’t win the ‘Best Dress’ award on the night. But nonetheless, she was happy to flaunt her gown in full confidence. Not to mention, the gown she wore was the embodiment of her kuya’s (brother) love for her. And besides, she and Maverick are now winning it all due to the overwhelming praise the gown is gaining from social media.
