Butterflies cutely landing on turtles and alligators is surely a sight to behold. The phenomenon pictured below is a rare thing to catch on camera, it's like a scene from an all-singing, all-dancing kids' cartoon movie! What you're seeing is not just a friendly "hover" on the part of the butterfly however…in actual fact, the winged creatures are drinking the tears of the larger animals! The butterflies in these pictures are called Julia Butterflies (Dryas iuilia). They drink tears to provide themselves with much-needed nutritional elements, such as sodium and other minerals needed for egg production and metabolism. Take a look!
