Most of us are used to rocks that are, well, rock-colored. Generally that means fairly uninspiring hues of gray, black and tan. That's why it's almost impossible to believe that these rainbow-striped mountains are real, but we can assure you that they are! The Zhangye Danxia Landform Geological Park is located in China's Gansu province and is home to this amazing multi-colored mountain range. The stripes are different layers of sandstone and other minerals, but the way that they're exposed is a result of tectonic plate activity that took place roughly 23 million years ago. In the following millennia, these rocks have been eroded by the elements to create the striking rugged mountain range you see today. Nature might just be the most awesome inventor of them all!
