This miniscule sea slug is actually adorably cute! Note, how much it looks like a cartoon sheep, with its beady eyes and adorable little feelers. No wonder people call it the “leaf sheep“. The proper name for this little slug (they grow up to just 5mm in length) is actually Costasiella kuroshimae.
The algae-eating ocean-dweller is found near Japan, Indonesia and the Philippines. What is really amazing about this little animal is that it is one of very few able to perform photosynthesis. When it eats algae, it sucks out the chloroplasts, incorporating them into their own bodies. So the “leaf sheep” is essentially a solar powered slug!
