We know a lot of self-taught artists who learned their skills on their own and became successful at it. But not everyone can learn and develop their skills without the guide of a teacher or tutor. Minneapolis-based artist Taji Joseph shares simple drawing tips on Instagram to help aspiring artists learn the basics of sketching.
Apparently, it is more challenging to teach with only visual aids compared to traditional teaching using verbal instructions and demonstrations accompanied with visual aids. Some professional artists including Jae Hyun attempt to help emerging artists by sharing their own drawing tips on social media. But despite all of these accessible nuggets of practical advice, many of us still find a hard time learning the ropes. Joseph tries to simplify it all by starting with the basics of drawing – forming the shape and using shading techniques.

Instead of presenting the entire subject, Joseph made it easier by presenting the smaller details first. He starts by providing useful drawing tips on sketching human parts and facial features such as eyes, lips, eyebrows, nose, ears, hands, and even fingernails. Once you’ve mastered sketching these crucial details, drawing the general subject would be a lot easier. Furthermore, the artist tries to explain the graphite grading scale using actual examples of the different degrees of the pencil’s darkness and hardness in shading. He also gave examples of the different shading techniques to achieve different shading results.
“Apart from learning about subject matter, I thought it would be useful for emerging artists to learn about the shading process,” the artist explained. “Early into my studies, I had no idea what drawing terms such as 2B, 3H, chiaroscuro, or negative space really meant.”

Since attention to details is very important in art, Joseph often features drawing tips on human anatomy complete with labels on the different parts of the human body. Aside from making impressive sketches of women and female celebrities, the artist is also inspired by anime, Disney films, cartoon shows, animals, video game characters, and flowers.
