From the ancient art of origami to contemporary 3D paper sculptures, many artists have been discovering new ways to use paper as an art medium rather than just a canvas for their masterpieces. Wales-based artist Polly Verity coaxes sheets of paper to make low relief paper sculptures featuring figurative facial silhouettes. Each piece is made out of single sheet of watercolor paper or canvas that she carefully folds, bends, and twists to render human features out of the folds and creases.
Verity’s low relief paper sculptures reveal expressive facial features as they interact with the light source. Curved folds and geometric repeat patterns take shapes into nose, lips, and eyes to reveal expressive profiles of a human face or a kissing couple. Each piece comes alive when light hits the contours and curves on the paper. Verity also plays with colored papers and sometimes wire mesh to render her creations.

Her series of low relief paper sculptures started when she tried to fold along the profile of a face with a paper. That’s when she found out that she could slightly tweak the paper and ease curves to give form and volume. Her amazing collection includes minimalistic paper lips, paper kiss, paper portrait, and paper face. You can buy her original artworks via her online shop and follow her on Instagram to keep updated with her latest creations.
