Photographer Gary Schneider Creates Ethereal-Looking Illuminated Portraits Using An Unusual Technique

Photographer Gary Schneider created his 'Faces' series using a technique which is quite extraordinary. Shooting the portraits between 1989 and 2009, he asked the subjects to lay down on a black backdrop as he slowly illuminated their faces while using his large-format camera. Over the course of 8 minutes, he lit the subjects hair, followed by the forehead and finally each side of the face. The long exposure shoot captured every tiny facial movement, giving the finished pieces a weirdly ethereal look where the features often look strangely bizarre.
