One Potterhead is certainly living the Hogwarts dream with his Harry Potter inspired bedroom. Meet Brian Thompson, a barista from Thousand Oaks, California, who has completely transformed his bachelor’s bedroom into a magical chamber. The best part? He’s done it all on a budget.
The idea came to him after he visited the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios in Orlando. Of course, it’s every Harry Potter fan’s dream to experience even a replica of Hogwarts in person. But seeing and experiencing its impressive interiors wasn’t enough for Thompson. He decided he wanted to recreate his own Potter-themed room. So, he returned home with a grand renovation plan in mind.
Thompson’s Bedroom before the Renovation
He spent the following year and a half gathering all the materials he needed to complete his enchanted chamber. He scouted various secondhand stores and thrift stores to look for furniture and decorations apt for a wizardly abode. He revealed that he was able to get all his furniture from Goodwill and local thrift stores.
“Each red chair in my room was about $6 (£4.60). The black display case was $5 (£3.90). I must have made over 100 trips to thrift stores over 18 months to find everything I have.”
To achieve a much more realistic Hogwarts vibe, Thompson also created faux brick walls for his room. He did this by cutting insulation foam boards into block sizes. He then sealed them with caulk for added protection and painting.
Renovation Works in Progress
In addition to that, he also built two tree pillars consisting of chicken wire and Great Stuff insulation foam. He even created some roots creeping to the room’s entrance. Indeed, his attention to detail is just simply superb.
One of Hogwarts’ main attractions is the Enchanted Ceiling. As expected, Thompson also came up with his own rendition of it by using LED string lights. On top of that, he also adorned his ceiling with a fancy chandelier and some floating candles.
Harry Potter-inspired Bedroom on a Budget
To complete the illusion of a night sky, he painted his ceiling black and added some touches of white and gray spray paint to replicate clouds. He also lined the top of the walls with mirrors to create an “infinity” effect that extends beyond the chamber’s walls.
Overall, Thompson spent 18 months turning his dream Harry Potter-inspired bedroom into a reality. He estimated the total renovation cost to be at around $1,500 (£1,167.20). And everything was well worth it. When he shared the photos of his newly revamped room, the post immediately went viral. Indeed, people admired his creativity and resourcefulness. In the post, Thompson wrote:
“It’s quite difficult to describe the feeling I get when I sit in this room. To be in a space that was brought to life from nothing but a simple idea and a few drawings. There’s nothing I love more in the world than to simply create.”
