London-based street artist Mobstr is famous for his provocative and sarcastic typographic graffiti on walls and billboards. In order to convey his message, he typically uses spray paint and stencils for his street artworks. Due to the irony of his graffiti, he often creates a dialogue between the medium and the viewers. So, when he walked past a partially-painted wall on his way to work, he knew he had found a new medium where he can express his sense of humor. But little did he know that it would lead to a fun graffiti conversation between him and a city worker.
One morning, Mobstr passed by a partially-painted wall on his way to work
He started out by spray painting the word ‘RED’ on the painted part of the wall. But the minimal graffiti failed to make an impression on the other end. So, the street artist decided to scribble a bit more next to the text. His decision proved to be effective because he noticed days later that his graffiti was painted over with red paint. And that’s when the fun graffiti conversation started.
Every time Mobstr spray paints the word ‘RED’ on the painted area, the city worker would cover the text with a red paint. But when the artist wrote the text above the painted area, something unexpected happened. Instead of painting it over, the city worker used a pressure wash to remove the text. Mobstr used to create street arts that can stir the viewers’ curiosity. But this time, he’s the most curious one. Why won’t the city worker use paint beyond the painted area? This is when the curious artist started to make an experiment.
He deliberately wrote words within the painted area and the line beyond it. Days later, the text within the painted area was painted with red, leaving the text above the line as it was. For several days, Mobstr continued to scribble words to provoke the city worker to do something about the graffiti above the line.
Finally, the city worker responded by covering the graffiti with a red paint, forcing him to go over the line.
But Mobstr isn’t done yet. The provocative artist continued to write above the line. And each time, the city worker would remove the texts by painting it over and pressure washing.
The fun graffiti conversation went on for a year until the city worker had enough. By painting the entire wall with red paint, the hilarious communication between the artist and the city worker finally comes to an end.
Mobstr documented his remarkable interaction with the city worker on his website with a title The Curious Frontier of Red.
