In this world where countries are divided by oceans, race, and beliefs, what we need is a bridge that can unify the world and invite people to rise above discord and prejudices. It is for this reason that this magical portal was developed. This sci-fi-inspired structure is a social innovation developed by the Benediktas Gylys Foundation, a non-profit organization based in Vilnius, Lithuania. The concept behind this innovation is quite straightforward. And that is to allow people in two different cities to meet and interact with each other in real time. Opening a digital door to let people peek into different places and cultures will eventually encourage them to reconsider the meaning of unity.
Apparently, unity and world peace are something the world hasn’t achieved yet. But this goal isn’t a pipe dream because unity in diversity is possible. All it need is a catalyst to remind people that humankind is really one species regardless of the language, skin color, or religion. To do this, people need to witness and experience different cultures around the world. With the modern technology we have now, connecting two different countries digitally would be easy. And this motivated the creative science foundation to design a real-time digital portal and apply technology in creating a bridge between two cities in different countries.
Digital Portal Lets People Peek Into A Different Place In Real Time

The digital portal looks like a circular door with a large screen and camera that broadcasts live images. The first two portals were installed in Vilnius, Lithuania and Lublin, Poland. As people from these two separate cities approach the concrete-and-steel ring, they are able to look through a window to a place roughly 375 miles away. The two portals were purposely set up in public places: the one in Vilnius was centrally located near a train station and the one in Lublin was installed in the main city square.

Now, you may think the idea isn’t really something new considering that we’re now accustomed to virtual interactions and social media. True enough, you can just easily use Skype, FaceTime, Messenger, or other video chat apps on your smartphones. But these interactions are usually reserved for people we already know. Furthermore, talking to miniaturized people on a small screen doesn’t actually give the experience of an actual interaction. The digital portal, on the other hand, presents people in their full 1:1 scale. Plus, it allows you to meet and interact with random strangers which makes the experience a lot more exciting.

With the real-time digital portal acting like a window between two distant cities, people passing by can simply smile and wave to greet each other. People in Vilnius and Lublin would sometimes entertain each other by showing off their best dance moves or making perfectly-shaped hearts with their hands. Benediktas Gylys Foundation aims to let more countries experience the same as they are planning to create more portals. Their next project is to connect Vilnius to Reykjavik, Iceland and London. While attaining unity doesn’t happen overnight, this can be one of the crucial stepping stones to help everyone move forward to the ultimate goal of humankind.
