Tossing rice art is one of the latest viral social media trends that is currently taking the internet by storm. Everyone’s been doing it and if you haven’t tried it yet then you’re falling behind the trend. The one behind this latest TikTok trend is still a mystery although a few people claim they created it. But Minnesota-based mom and artist Maria Lynn is making a name for herself as one of the best artists at this craft.
The challenge in this trend is to create 3D portraits by tossing colorful grains of rice into the air. To do this, you’ll need to create the portrait on a wooden board by using colored rice grains (dyed or painted). The image has to be inverted so that the real image is shown to the camera when the rice is flipped into the air. Once the portrait is laid out, hold the board and quickly throw the grains in upward direction while you hang onto the edges of the board. This will momentarily display the 3D portrait in mid-air before the grains fall back in a jumbled pile.

Needless to say, one has to be super creative in making the design, which is laid down backwards on a flat board. Lynn goes through a two hour-long process of coloring and arranging the grains to form the portrait. She often takes inspirations from pop culture characters including Spongebob, Winnie the Pooh, Pikachu, Mickey Mouse, emoji icons, and more.

Tossing rice art needs to be filmed in slow-motion to capture the beautiful creation in mid-air. The 3D image is briefly shown for a split second. So, it would be too quick to capture in real time. But then again, it’s easier said than done. Many people have tried it but only a few succeeded in creating impressive outcomes.
