The English language has a lot of strange idioms, such as "cool as a cucumber" and "kick the bucket." The thing is, native speakers don't always realize how unusual they sound when you haven't been raised with them as part of your vocabulary. When Roisin Hahessy moved to Brazil to teach English, it made her stop and think about how some English idioms might sound odd to her new students.
