In 2014, UK mom Sarah Ivermee founded Lugs, a company that produces decorative kits for hearing aids and cochlear implants. In order to encourage children to wear hearing aids, Sarah created custom-made kits to transform the device into superhero figures. Sarah’s son was diagnosed as profoundly deaf three months after his birth. So, she was able to experience the struggle of convincing her son to wear hearing aids and cochlear implants. One of her friends also had a nine-year-old daughter with hearing problem. But since her classmates started teasing her about her hearing aid, she refused to wear it again. At that time, Sarah thought of decorating the girl’s hearing aid by placing nail stickers onto the device. Surprisingly, the girl loved the new design and started wearing the hearing device again.
The result gave Sarah a brilliant idea, an idea that could benefit her son and other kids with hearing impairment. She started to create different designs ranging from superheroes and cartoon characters to colorful flowers. Her son, who was 4-years old back then, loved to wear his hearing aids with superhero designs. By creating Lugs, Sarah was able to help other parents in encouraging their children to wear hearing devices and cochlear implants.
“Needless to say, our son Freddie reaps the most benefit from the business, as he gets to choose new designs every month, making all his hearing friends at school very jealous!”, she says.
