Now, we probably all know someone who's a bit of a self-proclaimed punctuation expert. Yet getting a tattoo of a semicolon is a bit over the top isn't it? Well, you may be surprised to learn that there are currently waves of people getting semicolons inked on their bodies. And it's nothing to do with grammar…instead, it's to help raise awareness of mental health issues, including depression, suicide, addiction and self-injury. The trend was started by Amy Bluel, who tragically lost her father to suicide. She wanted to start an organization and movement to help other people struggling with issues such as depression. Bluel quickly identified the semicolon as the perfect symbol to demonstrate her aims. As she puts it… "A semicolon is used when an author could've ended their sentence, but chose not to. The author is you, and the sentence is your life." Bluel founded the organization, Project Semicolon has been encouraging people to draw or tattoo a semicolon on their bodies, to remind us of the power of oneself.
