      "Than" is the correct usage in this context because Laila was using a "rather…than" clause. Had Laila used a temporal conditional clause, Fatima would be correct; this would mean that Laila meant that she'd rather have Janet "learn the difference…" and then (after the first fact) get a dress. Either way, I applaud Fatima's effort at criticism, as well as Shen's support for Laila's flawless grammar!

      "Then" is used for something that happened after something else. E.g. I went home and then showered. Whereas "than" is used to compare something to something else. E.g. I like ice cream more than chocolate.
