Artists create art to convey a powerful message or express their thoughts or feelings about things. But Japanese sculptor Akiko Mimasu has created something different. Her wooden figurative sculptures feature ethereal figures of sleeping children emerging from long chunks of raw timber wood. Looking at the serene faces of the slumbering figures, it’s hard to interpret the message behind these enigmatic pieces. With such tender expression the figures’ represent, it’s also difficult to fathom the emotions that come with them.

That’s the main idea behind the art of Akiko Mimasu. While most sculptors let their creations talk to the viewer, Mimasu opts to let the viewer talk and reveal their own interpretation depending on how they see these wooden figurative sculptures. What lies inside the block of wood? They seem so at ease but what are these sleeping figures thinking at the moment? Is it a boy or a girl? What kind of clothes are they wearing beneath the wooden log? The viewer will have to figure these out themselves.

Based in Hiroshima, Mimasu uses block of raw wood and mainly carves parts of the head of hands on top of each log. Interestingly, she brilliantly juxtaposes the tender expression with whimsical headdresses that somehow tells a bit about the figure’s personality. From the neck down, she leaves the rest of the wood in its raw state to manifest another artful juxtaposition.
