For many people of the younger generations, ‘The Simpsons’ is one of the greatest shows of all time. Due to people’s enthusiasm for this classic piece of programming, you get a lot of fan theories, some just for fun and others really could be true within the confines of The Simpsons universe. Redditor user ‘Hardtopickaname’ came up with one that’s actually pretty convincing! His theory hinges on the season 4 episode ‘Homer the Heretic’ in which Homer skips church on a Sunday morning and ultimately ends up having a conversation with God, that goes as follows…
Homer: God, I gotta ask you something. What’s the meaning of life?
God: Homer, I can’t tell you that.
Homer: C’mon!
God: You’ll find out when you die.
Homer: I can’t wait that long!
God: You can’t wait six months?
Homer: No, tell me now!
God: Well, ok. The meaning of life is…
But, it’s been more than 20 seasons since that was written, way over six months, was God wrong? Well, maybe not, according to Hardtopickaname. Six months later, during season 4 episode 18 ‘So It’s Come to This: A Simpsons Clip Show’ Bart pulls a prank on Homer. It goes wrong and Homer ends up in the hospital, and a vending machine falls on him and he ends up in a coma. At the end of the episode, he wakes up choking Bart.
Or does he?! Hardtopickaname thinks that Homer may still be in a coma, in a way fulfilling God’s prophecy that Homer would only be around for six more months. This could explain why, after more than 20 years, Homer’s family haven’t aged a day.
They go on to discuss that prior to episode 18 of season 4, the plot lines have been more mundane. Featuring things such as Bart cheating on a test, Marge considering having an affair and Lisa getting a pony.
However, following that episode, things start to get more zany. Mr. Burns captures the Loch Ness Monster, Homer becomes an astronaut, Principal Skinner turns out to not really be Principal Skinner, Homer and Bart buy a racehorse and visit a secret land of jockeys.
Perhaps all these occurrences are simply in Homer’s head as he lies comatose. This could also explain all the celebrity appearances. When his family talk to him about the new Mel Gibson movie, he makes a movie with the star. When a Lady Gaga song comes on the radio, she appears in the fantasy world in his head.
Could this be the truth behind The Simpsons? Well, we doubt it’s what the writers had in mind, but it’s still a fun theory!
