Back in 2014, photos of a starry-eyed owl became viral on the internet because his eyes look emblazoned with a celestial scene. And just like that, Zeus the Blind owl became an internet star. It has been 5 years since this special bird made headlines online. But his fans just can’t seem to get enough of his spectacular eyes. Even in the photos, it feels as if we’re catching a glimpse of the cosmos just by looking at his eyes.
Zeus the Blind Owl, as he is popularly known, was found lying on a porch of a Southern California home back in 2012. It turned out that the bird was injured after it flew into the side of the house. When the injured bird was brought to the vet, they found out that the Western screech is blind. And that he was unable to see where he was going which led him slamming into the side of the house. Amazingly, it was the owl’s eyes that immediately caught their attention.

Typically, Western screech owls have yellow eyes. But Zeus the Blind Owl has eyes that look like a starry night. The special bird was then turned over to the Wildlife Learning Center in Sylmar, California. The name ‘Zeus’ is a reference to the Greek god of sky and thunder. Since then, he has been a permanent resident at the rescue center. He is ‘non-releasable’ due to his blindness because it prevents him from surviving on his own in the wild.
